Growing Together… Let’s Do It!

Autumn is the perfect time to start a vege garden or to plant out some crops so you can enjoy winter roast vege, soups, stews or even winter salads. I’m planning to put in some lemongrass, lettuces, cavelo nero (tuscan kale) and Italian sprouting broccoli this weekend. Then perhaps some purple carrots for extra randomness and colour. Why not grow stuff you can’t buy in the supermarket I say?! Winter vege may not be as sexy as the heirloom tomatoes and abundant bounty of summer, but there is still much to play with now.

As things get colder, growth inevitably slows down. Above you can see that Linda got creative with some old windows to give her wee seedlings some extra protection. Windows in the garden – what the? Well, it just so happens you will be able to check out her garden and DIY efforts for yourself.

On Saturday 8th May we are having a get-together at the Burson’s for morning tea, and a nosey at Linda’s garden. Whether you just have a dying pot plant, or are completely self-sufficient, we would love you to come along! Bring something to share for morning tea, along with some gardening tips or questions. So Ladies and Gents, hope to see you out in the glorious West at 10.30am! If its raining we will postpone until the same time on May 15th. Contact the office if you need the address, or just ask someone on Sunday who looks gardeny (yes I did just make up a new word).

Hope to make it (as long as junior hasn’t made his/her appearance!) and I’ll bring my mum! She has YEARS of gardening know-how so we can make sure we pick her brains! Looking forward to it :-)

Fun morning! Not sure what was the highlight..the gardening conversation or the morning tea!
Both I think! With all those potatoes dug up I have a nice clear and freshly composted patch ready for
    some new winter planting…any sugestions?
Also going to sow some sweet pea seeds on the weekend, that will hopefully grace an old trellis that
needs some life in the spring.
Looking forward to more Growing Together next month..keep your eye on this blog for details.
    Keep gardening!

Well that weather on saturday was perfect! Just enough time between showery days to plant some more winter veges..
spinach, silverbeet, celery, lettuces…and prepare a plot for the next crop of potatoes. I have it on great authority (my mums husband, Ken, who is 85 and knows everything there is to know about gardening) that we can sow potatoes on July 1st…cover them with pea straw in case of frost…wait 65 days….then reap a harvest..and then straight after camp, sow another crop…..and enjoy new spuds for christmas!
And….I found another old window! So the box hedge cuttings are now nicely growing under a warm glass (window) house
Look forward to our next get together.

Arbor Day..did you all plant a tree today?
I have started what I hope will be a little orchard….by adding a Crab apple and Lime tree to my small fruit tree collection of a plum and lemon. I’m planning on planting another apple, an orange & maybe a grapefruit as well.
And I also laid out a pile of seed potatoes in the sun, to ‘green up’ the sprouts. I have it on good authority that July 1st is a good day to plant spuds, with around a 65 day growing period.
So, when I come home from camp, I will be expecting a harvest, and then sowing another crop ready for christmas..new potatoes!
Looking forward to our next get together…June 12th?
