Dance dance dance.

We just wanted to share with you the story of one of the many amazing people in the Edge community who give of themselves, for the benefit of others. Often we don’t hear about these ones – they are un-sung heroes – and one of these people is Allie Carter. In sharing some of her journey she says:

Sometimes I wonder why I ever gave up my comfortable, consistent, nine-to-five office job. There were definitely good points, the salary and paid holidays for a start. But deep down I was frustrated and I knew that I wanted to do more.

Now eight years after I quit my corporate job, I work longer hours for less pay, and am exhausted at the end of each day. But I love what I do. Everyday I have the opportunity to make a difference in the life of a person facing difficulties.

I’m a Dance Specialist, which means I use dance as a medium for learning and development. Most of my clients are children and they all have special learning needs. It certainly has its challenges, but the rewards are many. An outstretched arm, a beaming smile, a word clearly spoken – they are all simple gestures, yet huge milestones for these children.

There was a time when I didn’t know what my “calling” was. When I asked God what I should do, He just said “dance”. So I just put my hope and trust in Him, and followed the dreams and desires He placed in my heart. I know that sounds a bit corny, but basically it was that simple. I had to make the first move, take that step of faith, and boy I am so glad that I did.

Every day I can use my passion for dance to bring about change in people’s lives. Every day God’s special children show me the true meaning of joy.

This Sunday Allie and her students are putting on a show at the Ellerslie War Memorial Community Centre at 2pm. The concert will be followed by prize giving, and an afternoon tea. If you would like to go along and show your support you can get a ticket by emailing dance4everyone@xtra.co.nz or calling 021 634 554.

Great stuff Allie!
